Instructional Methods

Good trainers are able to vary their instructional methods to adapt to the needs of the people they are training, and to keep the training interesting.  While most trainers have one or several preferred methods, it is always good to keep challenging yourself to improve on some different ways.  The National Biological Information Infrastructure provides a presentation to help trainers learn different instructional methods, and to understand when each type is most appropriate.  You can find it at http://www.nbii.gov//datainfo/metadata/training/ttt/skills/pdf/methods.pdf .

This presentation contains information on the following instructional methods:

modified lecture

traditional lecture

brainstorming

computer-based training

demonstration

exercises

worksheets/survey

observation

question and answer

guided discussion

readings

storytelling

role playing

video

games

debriefing

Brushing up on some of these methods may help you to deliver more creative and effective training!
